Tydsvorme

Tydsvorme, or verb tenses, indicate the time at which an action or event takes place. In Afrikaans, there are three main tydsvorme:

  1. Teenwoordige tyd (present tense): The teenwoordige tyd is used to describe actions or events that are happening in the present or general truths and habits. It is also used to express future actions that are scheduled on a timetable or part of a plan.

Example: Ek hardloop elke oggend. (I run every morning.)

In this example, “hardloop” indicates a habitual action that takes place in the present, as well as a future action that is part of a regular routine.

  1. Verlede tyd (past tense): The verlede tyd is used to describe actions or events that have already happened in the past.

Example: Ek het gisteraand geslaap. (I slept last night.)

Here, “geslaap” indicates an action that took place in the past, specifically last night.

  1. Toekomende tyd (future tense): The toekomende tyd is used to describe actions or events that will happen in the future.

Example: Ek sal môre met jou praat. (I will talk to you tomorrow.)

In this example, “sal praat” indicates a future action that is planned to occur tomorrow.

These tydsvorme allow you to accurately convey the timing of actions or events in relation to the present, past, or future. Using the appropriate tydsvorm helps to provide clarity and accuracy in your communication.
